Kobe Internation Baptist Church
Growth of KIBC

Growth

In 1989, attendance in the KIBC evening service grew to average 75-95 people and the meeting place moved from CLI to Gakusei Center, located on the east side of the same block as Rokko Atelier Building. The morning and evening children's classes continued at CLI until it closed in early 1992. During the summer of 1992, the a.m. Bible study and worship service met at a city owned facility near Rokko-michi station and the evening service met at at public building near Hankyu Rokko. In the fall of 1992, all services moved to the Nishimoto Construction Company meeting hall and continued there until January 1994. At that time the evening service moved to the YWCA building in Oji Koen as it had once again outgrown the facility.

Association with J.B.C.

In the summer of 1988, KIBC was accepted into the Japan Baptist Renmei, which is a group of cooperating Japanese churches with which the Southern Baptist Missionaries are associated.

Mission Outreaches

During the early period of Pastor Barham's ministry (1987-1989), the decision was made to sponsor Japanese mission work as the need arose. KIBC would be the "mother church". KIBC's first sponsorship was of the Hirakata Mission in north Osaka. This started in the missionaries home and grew to a membership of 36, meeting in rented space near a train station.
In late 1990 the second outreach began in the newly developed and growing area of Flower Town and Woody Town in Sanda. It began with an English lesson and a Bible study. Rokko Island work began in 1994 as missionaries took up residence on the island. The desire to begin a work on Rokko had been present for several years, but meeting space was only available to residents. The missionaries started the work from their apartment.

Annual Events

Easter Sunday sunrise service and breakfast began in 1986 in a member's home. From 1987 to 1990, a joint service with Kobe Union Church was held on the balcony of the old Canadian Academy facility. Most recently the new Canadian Academy facility on Rokko Island.has been utilized. Thanksgiving dinner and worship began in 1987 in a member's home. In succeeding years, the Thanksgiving dinner has been held in the Canadian Academy cafeteria. Christmas Caroling began in December 1987 at Hankyu Rokko Station. Tracts are distributed and a fellowship time is held afterward. Christmas Eve service was first held at Friendship House in 1987. The service is bilingual and is held by candlelight. The message of salvation in Christ is central as this is a popular service for both foreigners and Japanese. A New Year's Eve was also begun in 1987 at the Barham's home.
